Why do people get back surgery?

April 4, 2023

80% of this can be avoided by making better decisions everyday.

People may get back surgery for various reasons, such as:

  1. Chronic back pain: Back surgery is often recommended for people who have chronic back pain that doesn’t respond to non-surgical treatments, such as physical therapy or medication.
  2. Spinal cord compression: Surgery may be necessary if there is a compression of the spinal cord or nerve roots that is causing pain, numbness, or weakness in the legs.
  3. Herniated discs: A herniated disc occurs when the soft inner part of a spinal disc protrudes through the outer layer, causing pressure on the spinal cord or nerves. Surgery may be necessary to remove the protruding portion of the disc.
  4. Spinal stenosis: Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal canal that puts pressure on the spinal cord or nerves. Surgery may be necessary to remove the bone and tissue that are causing the narrowing.
  5. Scoliosis: Scoliosis is a condition in which the spine curves abnormally. Surgery may be necessary to correct the curvature of the spine.
  6. Fractured vertebrae: If a vertebra is fractured due to injury or osteoporosis, surgery may be necessary to stabilize the spine and prevent further damage.

It’s important to note that surgery is usually considered a last resort after other non-surgical treatments have been tried and found ineffective. A doctor will typically only recommend surgery if they believe it is necessary to relieve pain, restore function, or prevent further damage to the spine.
